What the average new car loan rate is, in plain English

The Federal Reserve Board’s G.19 Consumer Credit release reports the finance rate on consumer installment loans at commercial banks. This page follows the rate on loans for new automobiles, for two loan lengths.

A longer loan usually carries a higher rate, because the lender waits longer to be repaid. Auto loan rates also follow the general level of interest rates, so they tend to move with the federal funds target range and Treasury yields over time.

These are averages at commercial banks. Loans from finance companies and dealers are not in these series, and a borrower’s own rate depends on credit, the vehicle, and the lender.

Finance rate
The interest rate charged on an installment loan.
Installment loan
A loan repaid in equal payments over a set number of months.
Commercial bank
A bank that takes deposits and makes loans, as distinct from a finance company.

Average new car loan rate questions answered

What is the latest average new car loan rate?

The finance rate on a new-car loan at commercial banks was 7.47% for a 48-month loan in August 2026 and 7.54% for a 60-month loan in August 2026, according to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, via GOVSPENDING.ORG.

Why do 48-month and 60-month loans differ?

A longer loan usually carries a higher rate because the lender waits longer to be repaid.

Do auto loan rates follow the Fed?

They tend to move with the general level of interest rates, including the federal funds target range, but a single bank’s offer also depends on the borrower and the vehicle.

Are used car loans included?

No. These series cover loans for new automobiles at commercial banks.

What does the as-of date mean?

It is the date the agency attached to the figure, and it is printed beside the figure. It can be earlier than today: a daily series is dated its business day, a weekly or monthly series is dated its week or month. The page also prints when this paper retrieved the file, so you can tell a late feed from a late print.

How do I cite a figure from this page?

Cite the agency first (Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, via GOVSPENDING.ORG). Then name The Fed Gazette as the place you read it. The Cite this panel on the page gives APA, MLA and Chicago lines built from the agency, the series name, the as-of date, the source URL and the date this paper retrieved the file.
