What the SOFR is, in plain English

SOFR is a broad measure of the cost of borrowing cash overnight with Treasury securities as collateral. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York calculates it from transactions in the Treasury repurchase agreement market and publishes it on each business day.

It replaced the London interbank offered rate, known as LIBOR, as the reference rate for many loans and derivatives in the United States. Because it rests on actual transactions, it is harder to move than a rate based on bank estimates.

SOFR is not the federal funds rate, but the two are close in normal times. For the federal funds target range and the effective federal funds rate, see the Fed rates page.

Repo
A repurchase agreement: a loan of cash secured by a Treasury security, repaid the next day.
Benchmark rate
A published rate that loans and contracts use as their base.
Collateral
The asset a lender holds as security for a loan.
