CPI energy index: what changed since the last print

The latest CPI energy index print is 321.148 for August 2026, higher than the print before it, 314.553 for July 2026. About a year earlier, for August 2025, it was 276.734, and the latest print is higher than that.

What the CPI energy index is, in plain English

The energy index is the part of the Consumer Price Index that tracks what urban consumers pay for energy. It covers energy commodities, such as gasoline and fuel oil, and energy services, such as electricity and natural gas delivered through utility lines.

Energy is the other category left out of core inflation, because its prices move quickly with oil and gas markets. A change in the energy index can move the all-items index in the short run while telling little about the underlying trend.

The index is published as a level, set so that the average of 1982 to 1984 is one hundred. The annual change that news reports quote is the percent difference between two levels. This paper does not compute it. The Bureau of Labor Statistics prints it in each release.
