What the jobs report is, in plain English

The jobs report is the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly Employment Situation. Two numbers lead it. Total nonfarm payrolls is a count of jobs at businesses and government, published in thousands of persons, and it leaves out farm work. The unemployment rate is the share of the labor force that has no job and is actively looking for one.

The headline figure in news reports is usually the change in payrolls from the month before. This paper prints the level as published and does not compute that change. The Bureau prints it in the release.

Congress has given the Federal Reserve two goals: maximum employment and stable prices. Employment data is one of the things the Federal Open Market Committee weighs, along with inflation, when it sets the federal funds rate.

Nonfarm payrolls
A count of paid jobs outside agriculture, from a survey of employers.
Unemployment rate
The share of the labor force without a job that is looking for work, from a survey of households.
Labor force
People who have a job or are looking for one.
