What the gross domestic product is, in plain English

Gross domestic product, or GDP, is the value of the goods and services produced in the United States in a period. The Bureau of Economic Analysis publishes it every quarter. The dollar figure on this page is the current-dollar level, so it includes the effect of price changes.

Real GDP removes the effect of price changes. The growth figure on this page is the Bureau’s own published percent change in real GDP from the preceding quarter, stated at an annual rate, and it is copied as printed. This paper does not compute growth from the dollar levels.

The Federal Reserve watches output alongside jobs and prices. GDP is revised as more data arrive, so a figure for an earlier quarter can differ from the one first printed. The values here are the latest stored prints.

GDP
The value of goods and services produced in the country in a period.
Real GDP
GDP with the effect of price changes removed.
Annual rate
A quarterly figure stated as if the pace held for a full year.
Seasonally adjusted
Smoothed for regular seasonal patterns, which is how this series is published.

Gross domestic product questions answered

What is the latest gross domestic product?

Gross domestic product was $32,563.03 billion for the second quarter 2026, and real GDP changed 2.20% from the preceding period for the second quarter 2026, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, via GOVSPENDING.ORG.

What is GDP?

Gross domestic product is the value of the goods and services produced in the United States in a period, published quarterly by the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

What is real GDP growth?

It is the Bureau of Economic Analysis’s percent change in real, inflation-adjusted GDP from the preceding quarter, stated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate.

How often does GDP update?

Quarterly, with revisions in later releases. The quarter for the latest print is shown beside the figure.

Does the Fed set GDP?

No. The Bureau of Economic Analysis measures it. The Federal Reserve watches it, with jobs and prices, when it sets the federal funds rate.

What does the as-of date mean?

It is the date the agency attached to the figure, and it is printed beside the figure. It can be earlier than today: a daily series is dated its business day, a weekly or monthly series is dated its week or month. The page also prints when this paper retrieved the file, so you can tell a late feed from a late print.

How do I cite a figure from this page?

Cite the agency first (U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, via GOVSPENDING.ORG). Then name The Fed Gazette as the place you read it. The Cite this panel on the page gives APA, MLA and Chicago lines built from the agency, the series name, the as-of date, the source URL and the date this paper retrieved the file.
