The latest 30-year print, 7.40%, is higher than the previous week (Oct 1, 2026) print of 7.28%.
The latest 30-year print, 7.40%, is higher than the year-earlier week (Oct 2, 2025) print of 6.34%.
This paper says only whether the latest stored print is higher than, lower than, or the same as an earlier stored print, and prints both. It does not compute a difference or a percent. For the weekly table and the 15-year rate, see mortgage rates today.
How to read the mortgage rate history
The series is the average rate on a 30-year fixed-rate home loan from Freddie Mac’s weekly Primary Mortgage Market Survey. A fixed rate stays the same for the life of the loan, so the survey rate describes new loans made in a given week, not loans already made.
Mortgage rates tend to move with long-term Treasury yields, which the market sets. The Federal Reserve does not set them. For the Fed’s own rates, see Fed rates today, and for the long yield, see the 10-year Treasury yield.
The chart draws stored weekly prints, thinned to every few rows on the longest ranges. A past print is not a forecast, and a rate from another decade bought a different home and a different dollar.
Mortgage rate history questions answered
What is the 30-year mortgage rate today?
The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.40% as of Oct 8, 2026. The stored history begins with 7.33% on Apr 2, 1971, according to Freddie Mac’s weekly Primary Mortgage Market Survey, via GOVSPENDING.ORG.
How far back does this mortgage rate history go?
The stored weekly series begins Apr 2, 1971. Freddie Mac’s survey is published weekly, and each print on this page is copied as published.
Why does the table show year-end prints?
Each row is the last stored weekly print in that calendar year, so the table reads as a yearly record. The row for 2026 is the latest print so far that year, not a year-end figure. Nothing is averaged.
Is this the rate I would get today?
No. It is a national weekly average. Your rate depends on your lender, your credit, your down payment, the loan, and the day you lock.
Does the Federal Reserve set mortgage rates?
No. Lenders set mortgage rates, and they are priced in the market. The Fed sets a target range for the federal funds rate, an overnight rate between banks.
What does the as-of date mean?
It is the date the agency attached to the figure, and it is printed beside the figure. It can be earlier than today: a daily series is dated its business day, a weekly or monthly series is dated its week or month. The page also prints when this paper retrieved the file, so you can tell a late feed from a late print.
How do I cite a figure from this page?
Cite the agency first (Freddie Mac, via GOVSPENDING.ORG). Then name The Fed Gazette as the place you read it. The Cite this panel on the page gives APA, MLA and Chicago lines built from the agency, the series name, the as-of date, the source URL and the date this paper retrieved the file.
