What the Treasury yield curve is, in plain English

The Treasury yield curve is the set of par yields the Treasury publishes for securities of different maturities, from one month to thirty years. A par yield is the yield a security would pay if it sold at its face value. Drawn left to right, the points make a line: the curve.

A curve that rises with maturity is called upward sloping, and one that falls is called inverted. This page prints each maturity's yield as the Treasury published it, and it does not say what a shape means for the economy. This paper does not forecast.

The Federal Reserve sets a target range for the federal funds rate, an overnight rate. Short Treasury yields sit close to where markets expect that rate to be, and longer yields reflect many other things. The Fed rates page shows the policy rate next to the 10-year yield.

Par yield
The yield a Treasury security would pay if it sold at its face value.
Maturity
The date a Treasury security repays its face value.
Inverted curve
A curve where a shorter maturity yields more than a longer one.
