What the prime rate is, in plain English

The prime rate is the rate banks charge their most creditworthy business customers, and it is the base for pricing many variable-rate loans. The Board of Governors reports the rate posted by a majority of the top twenty-five insured, U.S.-chartered commercial banks in its H.15 Selected Interest Rates release.

Banks set prime at a margin over the top of the federal funds target range, so it moves when the Federal Open Market Committee changes that range and rarely otherwise. Credit cards, home equity lines, and many small-business loans are priced as prime plus a margin.

The Federal Reserve does not set the prime rate. Each bank sets its own. The H.15 series reports the rate a majority of the large banks post.

Federal funds target range
